Surrey Remap: Making Everyday Life Easier Through Custom Engineering Solutions

For many people living with disabilities, everyday tasks that most of us take for granted can become significant challenges. When commercial products are unavailable or unsuitable, Surrey Remap steps in to provide practical, life-changing solutions.

What is Surrey Remap?

Surrey Remap is part of the wider UK-based REMAP charity network, which designs and builds custom-made equipment for disabled people. The organization brings together skilled volunteer engineers, technicians, and makers who donate their time and expertise to create devices tailored to an individual's specific needs.

Their mission is simple: to make life easier and more independent for people with disabilities when no suitable commercial solution exists.

What They Do

Surrey Remap designs and builds bespoke aids and adaptations that help people overcome everyday barriers. These solutions are created specifically for the user and may involve:

  • Designing completely new assistive devices.

  • Modifying existing equipment with the owner's permission.

  • Developing custom adaptations that improve independence, mobility, communication, education, and recreation.

The service is provided free of charge to clients and their carers.

Real-Life Projects

The impact of Surrey Remap can be seen through the innovative projects they have completed:

Adaptive Eating Aids

A disabled adult was unable to use standard cutlery. Surrey Remap created specially adapted knives, forks, and spoons that enabled independent eating, restoring dignity and self-reliance.

Modified Tools for Education

A schoolgirl with limited hand function struggled to participate in Design and Technology classes. Volunteers developed adapted hand tools that allowed her to safely join lessons alongside her classmates.

Custom Bicycle Steering System

A teenager with severe disabilities was unable to steer his bicycle conventionally. Surrey Remap modified the bike so he could control it using his elbows, allowing him to enjoy cycling more independently.

Accessible Art Equipment

An artist was able to continue painting through customized equipment that supported her specific physical needs, helping her maintain her creative passion.

Voice-Operated Page Turner

For a quadriplegic patient, Surrey Remap developed a voice-controlled page-turning device, enabling easier access to books and reading materials.

What Surrey Remap Does Not Do

While Surrey Remap provides custom solutions, there are clear limits to its work. The organization does not:

  • Charge clients, patients, or carers for its services.

  • Repair commercially available equipment.

  • Undertake building maintenance or unrelated construction work.

How the Charity Operates

Surrey Remap relies heavily on volunteers who contribute their engineering skills and workshop facilities. Volunteers typically cover project work in their own workshops using their own tools, while expenses such as materials and travel may be reimbursed.

The group operates within Surrey as part of a national network of more than 60 REMAP groups across the United Kingdom.

Funding and Support

The charity receives support through:

  • Healthcare referrals and funding channels.

  • Voluntary donations.

  • Independent fundraising activities.

As a charitable organization, community support plays a vital role in helping Surrey Remap continue delivering life-changing solutions to those who need them most.

Transforming Lives Through Innovation

Surrey Remap demonstrates how engineering, creativity, and community spirit can come together to solve problems that standard products cannot address. From adaptive cutlery and educational tools to mobility aids and communication devices, each project is designed around one person’s unique needs.

By creating practical solutions that restore independence and improve quality of life, Surrey Remap continues to make a meaningful difference for disabled people throughout Surrey and beyond.
